The WENRA spring plenary meeting was held on 25 - 27 March 2015 in Geneva, Switzerland. During the meeting the heads of the European nuclear safety authorities decided to accept Sergiy Bozhko, Chairman of the Ukrainian State Nuclear Regulatory Authority (SNRC) as a new member to WENRA.
Subsequently the two permanent working groups of WENRA on waste and decommissioning WGWD and on reactor harmonization RHWG reported on their recent activities.
WGWD reported on the publication of the Safety Reference Levels for Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities and presented its updated Decommissioning Report which was approved by the WENRA members.
An official reporting mechanism for the implementation of the SRLs for existing reactors will be established. It was therefore decided that each member shall report in a brief Report as of 1 January 2016 about the status of implementation of 2014 version of all SRLs for existing reactors.
The Chair of the European Nuclear Security Regulators Association (ENSRA), Kristof Horvath from the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA), presented the work of ENSRA. It was decided to continue to explore the possiblities for future cooperation possibilities between the two associations.
It was further decided to welcome Olga Lugovskaya, Chairperson of Gosatomnadzor, the Nuclear Safety Regulator of Belarus , to observe and actively participate in WENRA’s future activities and meetings and especially to attend and contribute to the working groups.
The participants of the WENRA meeting also visited the facilities of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) which are located in the vicinity of Geneva.
The WENRA autumn plenary session will take place in October 2015 in Madrid, Spain.
