The Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority (ANVS) started operations on 1 January 2015. The ANVS was established by combining expertise in the fields of nuclear safety and radiation protection, as well as security and safeguards.

For these fields the Authority focuses on the development of policy, legislation and regulations, licensing, and supervision and enforcement, as well as information of the public. The Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority is involved in
safety research and development studies and is responsible for ensuring that the Netherlands is prepared to respond to potential radiation incidents.

The ANVS complies with international guidelines, including those imposed by the International Atomic Energy Agency and collaborates closely with national and international organisations.

The ANVS will become an independent administrative authority (ZBO). The procedure to formally realize this requires an amendment to current legislation, which is expected to be completed by January 2016. Until then, the ANVS will be a directorate falling under the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, which will carry out the duties and responsibilities of the future ZBO.
